When Scandinavia meets Africa
Loving and valuing the traditional handicraft of the cultures across the continent, it is our aim to create unique designs through dialogue between the artisans and the designers. In keeping best of both worlds, designs remain rich in heritage and craftsmanship but are presented with simplicity influenced by the designers' Scandinavian roots.
In the handmade product the energy of the hands of the artisans and the facilitators behind it is radiant. From the sourcing of the material through the shaping and forming of the product, right to the product finally is packed and labelled is a group of people being acknowledged all the way for their work and partaking in presenting each design.
Our designs are slow design products. Its a long and time-consuming process from start to end with each handmade item. The gravity of history entailed in each product combined with the timeless design enable the products to become evergreeners decorating any space long into the future.
Settling down in the oasis of Siwa in the Western desert of Egypt, the By Hand family was embraced by the friendly and welcoming people of the oasis. The children have grown up on the laps of women embroidering and been drinking sickening sweet tea with the grandfathers since they were babies. Somehow, one way or the other this desert people accepted the family, aliens from the Western world, into their society.
Countless hours spent with these families looking at their work became the beginning of the BYHAA community.
Spreading out to the rest of Egypt and now into more countries in Africa it is still the personal contact and the time spent with all the families in the collaboration that is the base of BYHAA.
BYHAA works with women and men, all nationalities and all religions. Having no political agenda, the aim is to offer chances for people, to connect them and to promote collaborations across cultures and countries of Africa. In this manner we opt to simply broadcast some of the most beautiful things from this continent to the rest of the world.
In 2005 the By Hand family left their home country Denmark and set out to explore the cultures of Africa. As they traveled and got to know cultures they were introduced to unique artisanships. In their breathtaking work lay not only beauty but also exceptional craftsmanship taught through countless generations from farther to son, from mother to daughter.
Astonished by the techniques and the potential, they set out to work with these artisans in a dialogue work form, where ideas and outlooks are shared to create products footed in the ancient cultures, but headed in the contemporary world.
BYHAA products are blessed by all the hands they go through. They are quality products that take the time they take to make, created and designed in the spirit of timelessness that they may decorate any space from today and long into the future.
BYHAA reinvents and revives old traditions on the verge of being swallowed by globalization working to create possibilities and cooperations for artisans through a sustainable and ethical business platform while celebrating the vast artisanship of the African continent.
Even the streets of the sleepiest little town of East Africa are crowded with spectacular outfits bursting with colors and patterns.
Inspired by this daring way of dressing and the influence the colors and combinations have on the mind, the African Artisan Apparel sets out to bring some of this African vibe into contemporary fashion.
